API RP 755 is an industry response to the 2005 British Petroleum Texas City refinery disaster that resulted in 15 deaths and 180 injuries. It is an industry self-regulation and not a legally mandated regulation (subject to change).
Unlike PHMSA, API RP 755 is a tool for the management of risk, and not of fatigue. In essence, all rules pertaining to API RP 755 are built into SchedulePro. As you schedule employees for various shifts, SchedulePro will automatically run the rules and populate warnings as they become applicable. With that said, SchedulePro cannot automatically detect which shifts are considered by you as night shifts.
Therefore, your organization needs to first tell the system how you define night shifts before it can run the RP755 rules correctly; day shifts are excluded.
Setting up the API RP 755 Policy
The first step is to create a few Night Shift Lists under Home > Settings > Codes > Shift Codes.
- Click Edit next to Shift List Filters.
- Create a new list Name and Description, for example, Night Shifts 12-hour.
- Select the corresponding shift codes that belong to the Night Shift List, then click Save.
NOTE: There should be one shift list for each Primary Hourly Type: 8, 10, and 12-hour
Next, set up an API RP 755 policy for each Night Shift List under Home > API RP 755 Policies
- Click New.
- Enter a Policy Name, for example, API RP 755 for Night 10-hour shifts.
- Select the appropriate Night Shift List that was created under Home > Settings > Codes > Shift Codes > Shift List Filters.
